I sometimes find myself wondering why people buy certain cars. You always seem to have lots of choices, but which ones are the best and which ones are the worst?

I've always thought Volvos are cars for intelligent people and from my experience on the road I began hating the old Opel Astra because they always tend to be driven by people who consider themselves as the Gods of Traffic. What are your opinions?

Saabs, Audis, Volvos, and non-Ricer Hondas/Subarus have the smartest drivers, IMO.

I'd have to say that drivers of neon green Mustangs and muddy Jeep Cherokees are most smartest.

Saabs and Subarus are for smart people, and so are Volvos. Most other cars are a mix.

Depends on your definition of intelligence.

I do not share his love for the silly Miata, but he has yet to put something cooler in my driveway, despite sending me cool CL finds on a daily basis.

Very true. A car driven by the intelligentsia will in a number of cases be driven by complete geniuses, but in others will be driven by people who merely have convinced themselves they are. A hot rod may be driven by somebody razor-sharp in applied math who never went to college or is STEM and not humanities - or just be driven by somebody who slapped a bunch of things together. Cheap cars may be driven by people who have Better Things To Do, or just by cheapskates. Expensive imports may be driven by self-made men or old money - either with varying smarts.

Regardless "smart people drive this car and thus I am smart because I drive this car" is a real problem with some brands - Saab used to be up to their eyeballs in that.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that Saab owners had the highest level of education (however you determine that) of all makes. And my neighbourhood, which is full of professors, is also full of Saabs, Volvos and Subarus.

There was a neon green mustang parked on my street last week. Giant chrome wheels with spacers in the back making the rears stick out. Therefore, I'm going to have to disagree with you.

My sweet brilliant engineer boyfriend drives a Gotta Have It Green Mustang with very nice OEM wheels. Therefore, I'm going to have to disagree with you.

ANY car that is new and paid for, with a very good maintenance plan and extended warranty, and very good tires. There are more expensive cars in the hood than in nice areas. Well equipped Camry, Accord, and such most like paid off with a spotless service history. I respect that more than anything.

The Infiniti G35 always seems to have terrible drivers behind the wheel. I nearly got run over by one that was driven by my friend's dad. Shortly after that a G35 crossed three lanes to get in front of me then slam on the brakes.

Small sample sizes are the best sample sizes.

Yup.

I know a guy who has a multi-million dollar car collection and a massive house in coastal California. No college and a basic high school education. Made his own fortune owning and managing a few airport and city parking lots. Most of the time he's in a basic TDI Audi. Who is 'dumb' in this case, the guy with the low education level or the one with advanced degrees slaving away at a 8-6 job every day to make payments on his wife's Lexus? And I'm sure he's one of many.

If you want to go with book/degree smart then I'd say all of them drive whatever they want and brand doesn't matter. I have a meeting with two Phd's in Neuroscience in 45 minutes and one drives a Hyundai Elantra and the other a Jeep Patriot. Too busy advancing science to give a shit about their means of transportation. If anything you may see similar cars in a university parking lot but that could be a cultural thing.

I would not equate "intelligence" with the ability to drive a cookie cutter luxury car, be it a Saab, Volvo, Lexus, MB, BMW, Audi, or whatever. You are not "enlightened" for picking a particular brand. If you drive a basic Chevy Malibu for 15 years but can put your kid through college without loans isn't that a mark of intelligence?

What's often missing is judgment and not "intelligence" per se - see for example any number of college professors possessing the instincts and acumen of a bison on LSD.

Similar cars in a university parking lot is tied to cliqueing with "the smart people", which IMHO is a good way to signal that one is not terribly independent of mind.

Volvo drivers are generally pretty good. And since a lot of them likely bought a Volvo due to their concern for safety, they seem to drive safely and confidently.

On the other hand, Toyota drivers are consistently the worst on the road. New, old, car, van, or SUV, they always pull some stupid move or are oblivious to their surroundings. Nissan drivers aren't far behind, with mid 2000's Altima drivers being the worst offenders (though that's the kind of car that I was rear-ended by while stopped in traffic, so I'm a bit prejudiced now).
